UK Court Proceeds with Hearing as Russia Seeks Legal Representation
London, UK — A British judge has allowed a high-profile hearing to proceed despite objections from the Russian government, which argued that the case should remain suspended due to difficulties securing legal counsel.
In written submissions, Russia claimed that efforts to restart the litigation were “misconceived” and an attempt to take advantage of its current lack of representation in the UK. Officials stated they had approached 11 barristers and four law firms, all of whom either declined or cited conflicts of interest. The court also noted concerns that assets tied to the case may have been moved or dissolved beyond the jurisdiction of English courts. The Russian government continued to seek legal representation as proceedings advance.
