🛰️ Overview

On 24 February 1997, a serious onboard fire broke out inside the Russian Mir space station, endangering the lives of cosmonauts Vasily Tsibliyev, Aleksandr Lazutkin, and NASA astronaut Jerry Linenger. The incident, caused by a malfunction in a solid-fuel oxygen canister (SFOG), generated a three-foot flame and dense smoke within the Kvant-1 module—momentarily blocking escape routes and pushing life support systems to their limit.
